Sheldon's Souray's Approved Team List

Earlier today, six of the teams that Sheldon Souray would waive his no-trade clause for was released on TSN.  Previously, Sheldon Souray had provided Oilers GM, Steve Tambellini, with a list of ten teams that he would agree to be traded to.  Souray has a no-trade clause which expires on July 1st, 2010.

From Darren Dreger's report, the list of teams include three from each of the Western and Eastern conferences.  From the Western Conference, there's the Los Angeles Kings, Dallas Stars, and the Anaheim Might Ducks.  For the Eastern Conference, the list includes the Washington Capitals, New York Rangers, and the Philadelphia Flyers.  However, Souray had surgery on a broken hand on Tuesday.  The injury was incurred in a recent fight with Jarome Iginala.  It's anticipated that there's very little chance that he will be traded before the February 12th Olympic roster freeze, but there's a small chance that he still might be moved prior to the March 3rd trade deadline.

Though Sheldon Souray has a $5.4 million dollar cap hit on a contract that extends two more seasons, the actual salary is only $4.5 million dollars for the next two years.  Souray is already 32 years old and has struggled this season since recovering from his concussion injury earlier this season.  In fact, this year he has just four goals and thirteen points in 37 games.  Last year, he had 23 goals and 53 points in 81 games.  Would any of the teams on this list be willing to gamble on Souray given his age and recent injuries?

Deslauriers' luck continues tonight with another post hit while Grebeshkov was in the box. I can't believe the Wild missed on that back door slap pass.

Go Wild!

With the Kovalchuk sweepstakes over, that might help with some further player movement. I would guess that some of the teams in the mix for Kovalchuk were in a holding pattern waiting to see if they could or should acquire him.

Let the roster changes begin...

Hey Jay. I asked the Oilers what the deal was. Was it a real list? Or is this made up? They said this to me, "Tambellini said today the information out there is not correct." What information is not correct?

So do you guys think the list is real? And why would the Flyers and the Rangers be on it and not the Pens? Didn't he say he wanted to be closer to his kids? Isn't NY on the opposite side of the country? It doesn't all add up. So if anything, the list is half right. lol

Hey Smokin' Ray,

That's pretty cool that you heard back from the Oilers on this issue. The original source is TSN/Darren Dreger, so it's interesting that it might not be correct.

I also found it somewhat odd that there were cities listed that aren't particularly close to LA. It is possible that the Penguins might still be on his list though since there's four teams missing (he named 10 teams and there's on six on this list).

I don't think that Sheldon Souray will get traded this season. There might have been a slim chance before he broke his hand, but not it's pretty unlikely. Too bad really...

Hey Jay, Yeah this whole situation is strange. I trust Dreger 100%. He's always right, but like I said, some of those teams don't make sense to me. It would be nice to see the real list huh?

Smokin' Ray: Tambellini, when Tencer mentioned the list to him, had this to say: "I’m not aware of that list, so I don’t know where that’s coming from. In my mind, that’s totally inaccurate."

Smokin' Ray, I'm sure Dreger must have had a pretty good source to report his information. I also trust Dreger 100%, so I'm not sure about this situation. Really though, I didn't expect this list to ever get out, so it surprised me when I heard about it.

Racki, that'a pretty vague quote from Tambellini, isn't it? What exactly does he mean? We do know that several things have been inaccurate in Tambellini's mind, so that part is true. :)
